Monitoring coral growth
In October 2016,
SUB AQUA DiveCenter on Angaga started a coral nursery project. The aim was to rehabilitate the reef by nursing corals on lines.

restoring coral reefs on Angaga Island
3 months on and it is time to assess the Angaga coral nursery and give an update.
Our first update is good news!
Out of the 175 coral fragments that were originally attached to the coral lines, 170 of these are still alive and healthy. Some coral fragments are showing signs of growth around the rope holding it in place. This was a delicate job – to assess the coral lines while not actually disturbing them.
Overall the Angaga coral restoration project is looking successful so far with positive signs of progress. There was even a tiny crab that made home in one of the coral pieces so we created a housing project too!
Don’t forget, if you visit
Angaga Island in Maldives, see the staff at SUB AQUA DiveCenter to enquire about the coral restoration project.
Click on the photos below to enlarge. See SUB AQUA DiveCenter’s dive team on Angaga working hard to assess the island’s first coral nursery. You can see the coral growth in some of the photos.
We look forward to update again soon on the
Angaga Coral Restoration Project in Maldives.
